Jazz Age Party (I Love It.)

As fall approaches, I think I will take a moment to look back at the best of the warm months. Every summer on Governor’s Island a secret and lovely event occurs: Jazz Age Party. You are invited to slip away from this time of a looming financial crisis into a different time of . . . gulp . . . financial crisis. Anyway, the clothes are ornate, vibrant and swinging, the music promises to carry your feet away, and did I mention the mint julieps. Trust me, I am going to Jazz Age next year.

Challenge: Watch This Video Without Giggling/Being Embarrassed.

So . . .

Though this potentially looks like it was made in the basement of ABC in the mid-90’s it is actually in theaters now. And though most of the trailer looks like the United States is a testing tube for ethnic warfare I think the overall message is suppose to be positive. (Note that my voice would be trailing if I was saying this).

Anyway, it was produced by Walmart and Coca Cola. And has played at select theaters across the country to select audiences. Ok, no one showed up. It’s had the worse opening weekend in cinematic history. Bahaha!

Also . . . lil’ O’Reilly has made all these years of Bill totally totally worth it:

Have a great day!

Why I Like Brad Pitt.

Is it his entourage of multi-national children? Adorable, but no. His once rippling muscles of Hollywood fame? Hmm, not for me thanks. His love for architecture and modern design? Well, getting close but still just warm.

No, no the reason I like, really like, Brad Pitt is that he is donating $100,000 of his pocket cash to help fight the gay marriage ban in California. He issued this statement:

Because no one has the right to deny another their life, even though they disagree with it, because everyone has the right to live the life they so desire if it doesn’t harm another and because discrimination has no place in America, my vote will be for equality and against Proposition 8.”

A good argument and well placed donation.

Terrifying, Beautiful

I can’t stop looking at these pictures but they also completely terrify me. I am not afaird of being bit by a shark as I have knowingly swam in shark infested water several time. I am not afaird of snakes or spiders (ok kinda). But jellyfish, JELLLLLLLYFISH give me the chills. Maybe it is because it the word itself feels so serene but the actuality of the creature is . . . this . . .

Calling All Jews! MACH SHNEL!

To my favorite people on earth – the Jewish community of the world (I am a total Goy Jew) – Mazel Tov because I have the deal of a life time for you!

Perhaps you’ve heard of the most perfect little corner of the world, where peanuts grow and every one knows who you are. Ok, probably you haven’t . . . it is Dothan, Alabama I speak of! Beautiful, fabulous Dothan where the rivers are wide and the women are strong.

Ok, here’s the deal:
“Larry Blumberg is looking for a few good Jews to move to his corner of the Bible Belt. Blumberg is chairman of an organization offering Jewish families as much as $50,000 to relocate to Dothan, an overwhelmingly Christian town of 58,000 that calls itself the Peanut Capital of the World. Get involved at Temple Emanu-El and stay at least five years, the group’s leaders say, and the money doesn’t have to be repaid.”

Come on please move – I will move to Dothan too! You can cook me kosher soup (matzo ball please) and I will fold your laundry or something.

Ok, this is actually no joking matter. The jewish community of Dothan is getting older and needs a new young crop of hip happening people to keep the spirit (not of the holy ghost) alive. Apparently the town is drying up because everyone is moving to Florida. Oi vey.

Solace For the 2008 News Junkie.

I am sure a lot of you have become news junkies in the past few weeks, or even in the past few days with both the real storms and symbolic ones that have hit us (in US) lately. If not I truly commend you because I seem to check back to News Map and the New York Times through out the day.

If you aren’t familiar with news map you may want to check it out (as pictured below). It is a info graph of current events and changes sometimes second to second depending on relevance and popularity of story.

Check it out here.

Below: Perspctv graphs from the site Perspectv.com

If it is the polls that have you going you might want to check out Perspectv. The site calls itself a “An exploration of internet activity in reference to mainstream media. This project presents different perspectives in our world, including that of Mainstream media and user-generated content on the Internet. Explore the similarities and the disparities, hear the many voices that have emerged and choose which view, if any, makes the most sense to you. What we think vs. what they say we think — All the chatter on the Internet, all the traditional news media coverage, and all the pollsters — Perspctv brings it all together in a simple and elegant manner — and gives a unique “dashboard” picture of the elections at any one given moment in time, totally un-biased.”

It is really amazing to see the constantly updating of “Twitters” and blog headlines all concerning just the two presidential canidates on hand. Another interesting feature of this site is that you can download a widget to put on your blog, facebook or dashboard.

The following photographs have nothing to do with the news brewing. They are pictures of one of the oldest Cathedrals in the world where nuns still live.

And I would like to close with a recommendation for a fabulously funny podcast by one my favorite funny men, Rainn Wilson. Adaptly named “Book Chat with Rainn Wilson” the minute long podcasts consist of quick jokes, several interviews with Slash, and a complete lack of talking about books at all. Go to your podcast directory on itunes and check it out.

Come on you know that we all need a good laugh.

In other unrelated news, I recenty found these pictures of a girl I went to Middle and high school with on Friendster. Note: EVERYONE HAS LASERS!!!

Do you see all those lasers! I bet those kids also got to eat Little Debby sandwhich cakes and what not. Lucky ducks. I would have been wearing my homemade (requested) little house on the prairie dress for the occassion. Yes, I wore a 19th century-styled dress to school as often as possible.

Lastly, lastly . . . great art in Atlanta if you live here. Go check out the Mint Gallery. I went to a show at their non-profit space a couple of weeks ago entitled “Mix Tape” in which walkmen were mounted to the wall with a REAL mix tape blasting away through equally old-school headphones. Next to each music piece was a art piece that was inspired by the songs. Great concept. I love all the collaborative work I have seen lately.
